Material Readiness Checklist for a Manufacturing Work Order
Use a filled example and copyable worksheet to check required material, holds, other-job reservations, usable stock, shortages and the release decision.

A material-readiness check compares each work-order requirement with usable stock now, then records shortages, expected receipts and the person authorized to release or hold the job. Use the worksheet below for one job and repeat the component row for every required item.
The worksheet is an original planning aid. It is not a software screenshot or evidence that a particular ERP automatically enforces the release decision. It can be copied into a spreadsheet without submitting a form.
Define the stock basis before calculating
Record the work order, required start date, approved BOM revision and the time of the stock snapshot. Use the same unit for requirement, stock, holds and reservations. Check the location and item identity as well as the quantity.
For this worksheet, physical on-hand includes held or rejected stock. “Other reservations” means usable stock already committed to other jobs; it excludes the held stock. With that non-overlapping basis, usable now equals physical on-hand minus unavailable stock minus other-job reservations. Do not deduct a hold again if your source balance already excludes it.
A negative calculated availability signals a record or allocation problem to investigate. Do not silently convert it into a release-ready balance. Shortage now is the greater of zero or requirement minus usable now, after the inputs have been reconciled.
Check the filled example
Illustrative job WO-120 needs 120 brackets of revision B, measured in pieces. Stores counts 100 pieces including 20 on inspection hold. Thirty different, accepted pieces are reserved for another job.

The expected purchase receipt is future supply. It does not make today’s full job material-ready. Even if 70 pieces arrive tomorrow, check acceptance, revision, location and intervening allocations before changing the decision.
Copy the blank worksheet
Copy this CSV header and blank row into a text file or spreadsheet. Add one row per component, retaining the work-order context on each row. Keep blank inputs unresolved until their owner confirms them; a blank cell does not mean zero.

Keep a source reference with the sheet: approved BOM, stock count or ERP extract, hold record, allocation list and supplier receipt confirmation. The CSV is a record template; calculate the two result columns only after checking the stated stock basis.
Record release, hold or an approved partial release
Review every required component. Fifty available brackets do not establish that fifty finished units can start: check units per assembly, the rest of the BOM, permitted batch size and the operation’s constraints. The BOM guide covers the component requirement calculation.
The authorized planner records the quantity released, any restriction, the approver and the next review. If full release is held, name the shortage owner and the evidence needed to reconsider it. Material readiness is one release check; capacity, instructions and required quality approvals can still block the job.
Recheck when the inputs change
Revisit the sheet after an accepted receipt, inspection disposition, changed reservation, BOM revision or order quantity change. Keep the previous decision and its timestamp so the next shift can see what changed.

What is material readiness for a work order?
It is a checked assessment of whether the job’s required material is usable and available for the authorized release quantity, with shortages and decision ownership recorded.
Should an incoming purchase order count as usable stock now?
No. Keep expected supply separate until the material is received, accepted and available under the agreed allocation rules.
Can available stock be calculated by subtracting holds and reservations?
Yes, when physical stock includes holds and the deducted categories do not overlap. Check the source balance definition to avoid deducting unavailable stock twice.
